The COVID-19 outbreak has led to significant shortfalls in revenues for municipalities across Canada. Thus far, the Federal government has not been willing to provide support to COVID-19 related financial issues.
In an online poll conducted in the middle of May, we found that while there is a high level of uncertainty, Canadians tend to support the government’s decision NOT to provide new funding to municipalities so far. However, we found a tension that leaves the Federal government vulnerable on this issue. On a separate question, Canadians support the general idea of Federal support to help municipalities deal with COVID-19 financial challenges.
The ongoing debate on this issue may change how Canadians feel about the federal position on municipal funding in the weeks ahead.
