More than half (56%) of Canadians say that pandemics like COVID-19 are a critical threat to the future of Canada – more than for any other threat asked about. This is 40 points higher than in a 2010 study conducted with the Canadian Global Affairs Institute, and as high as a 2004 study conducted during the SARS crisis.
The high level of concern about pandemics puts them above climate change, international terrorism, globalization, and high levels of immigration on the list of concerns Canadians have.
Concern about pandemics is higher for older men and women, where the share who say climate change is a critical threat is as high as 67% among women 55+.
