Has the truck convoy unveiled a new politics in Canada? Today, INNOVATIVE released a new analysis of our protest tracking from the first two weeks of February. The report tracks the evolution of key Canadian values over the past 6 years and looks to see what defines protest supporters in our surveys.
The short answer is no, protest support is NOT coming from a rising wave of cultural backlash as we saw with Brexit and the rise of Donald Trump.
What defines the supporters of this protest are three things:
- Growing resistance to COVID restrictions,
- Libertarianism, and
- Government alienation
Protest supporters are mad as hell and don’t want to take it anymore. They feel government restrictions have gone beyond what is needed for the COVID threat today, and that government no longer cares for or listens to people like them.
