The first two weeks of INNOVATIVE’s September 2020 Canada This Month survey show that the new Conservative leader Erin O’Toole is more competitive than Andrew Scheer. Not only does O’Toole have much stronger net favourables (+3%) than Scheer had before stepping down (-34%), he is now tied with Justin Trudeau (+4%).
However, the strong favourable impressions O’Toole only have a limited effect on closing the gap as best Prime Minister. Last month in August, Scheer was 26-point behind Trudeau. O’Toole is now 20-point behind Trudeau. A strong plurality (46%) continue to say Trudeau would make the best Prime Minister, while O’Toole trails distantly at 26%.
Similarly, the positive impressions of O’Toole have not translated to any real impact on vote yet. The Liberals (34%) continue to hold a strong lead over the Conservatives (25%). The gap between the two parties remains steady month-to-month.
This survey report covers key results on how Canadians are rating the Federal government’s handling of COVID-19 and the impacts that is having for government satisfaction, leadership, and vote choice.
