While many Canadians remain uncertain about the meaning of an energy transition, familiarity has grown significantly since our benchmark survey in November.
As Canadians journey through the repercussions of the pandemic, their positions are shifting away from post-materialist concerns over the environment towards the materialist priority of the economy.
We see this in two ways:
• more Canadians say they prioritize the economy over the environment than before the outbreak, and
• agreement with pro-oil statements is increasing while agreement with pro-transition statements is declining.
So far, Canadians tend to believe the federal government seems to have found the right balance in assisting the oil industry. Based on the current debate, a plurality say that the support given to the sector by the federal government is just about right while just as many say too much as too little support. This reaction varies dramatically based on region and partisanship.
