While President-elect Donald Trump’s threat of a 25% tariff on Canadian imports to the US has placed a spotlight on the Canada-US election, American political leaders of all stripes have been calling on Canada to do more.
In a national survey conducted by INNOVATIVE Research Group from November 22 to December 3, 2024, we asked Canadians their views on a several of these concerns. Should Canada do more, do less or is Canada doing the right amount? On every issue we tested, at least 40% said Canada needs to do more:
- Fence off Criminals and Terrorists with Stricter Border Restrictions: A clear majority—68% of Canadians—believe Canada must do more to stop criminals and terrorists from entering the country
- Standing up to Unfair Competition from China: Economic competition remains front and center, with 52% of Canadians demanding more federal government actions to tackle this issue.
- Defending Canada’s North: Similarly, 52% believe Canada must do more to protect its northern sovereignty from external pressures, such as Russia and China.
- On Living Up to Canada’s NATO commitments and Developing New Critical Minerals Mines, 41% believe Canada needs to do more.
In addition, 55% say Canada is doing too little to prepare for an increase in illegal border crossings from the US, more so among older Canadians (55+ at 68%).
