Canadians are paying close attention to the news about incoming President Donald Trump. According to a national survey conducted by INNOVATIVE Research Group from November 22 to December 3, 2024, just over 7-in-10 (71%) say they are following the news about his win very or somewhat closely. This is almost double the attention Canadians typically give the government budgets.
Canadians are experiencing mixed emotions—with fear outweighing enthusiasm. just over half (52% of Canadians) report feeling afraid following Trump’s win. In contrast, only 21% describe themselves as excited, while others fall somewhere in between or remain neutral.
Canadians feel Pierre Poilievre is better equipped than Justin Trudeau to deal with Donald Trump:
- 40% of Canadians chose Pierre Poilievre, leader of the Conservative Party
- 24% leaned toward Justin Trudeau, the sitting Prime Minister
- While a similar 25% said neither leader was best suited for the task
One issue Poilievre should be worried about is that his lead comes primarily from Canadians who are at least somewhat excited about a Trump win. Those who are worried about Donald Trump are a little more likely to say Prime Minister Trudeau is better quipped to handle Canada-US relations.
INNOVATIVE will release further results on Canadian attitudes regarding the issues at play with the United States later this week
